The bird at the top of the shell symbolizes travel and safe return, among the front flippers made by waves.

The back flippers of the turtle, which shape the tiki's arms, are a stylized te ha (the vital breath) and a koru, which symbolizes new life.
They keep a Marquesan cross protected in the middle symbolizing balance and harmony.
