Waves represent here change and eternal movement, and the general shape recalls a bat because in China bats are held in great honour. The word for bat is pronounced "fu", like the word for "luck", and thus the bat is associated to good luck and prosperity. Bats are often depicted in groups of 5, around a longevity symbol, to symbolize the 5 Fortunes: good luck, prosperity, wealth, happyness and longevity.
