Phoenix itself represents eternity, according to the legend telling that the old phoenix burns in its own fire in order to be born young again from its ashes. The celtic symbol used for the background is a complex version of the triquetra, which is believed to symbolize eternity as well, and union, like a great part of the designs based on knots do.
